LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Great Western Highway is the better option

I FIND it hard to understand why everyone is so obsessed with an upgrade to the Bells Line of Road.

As a regular traveler to Sydney since our move to Orange 28 years ago, I could count on one hand the number of times I have used the Bells Line of Road.

My experience is that the Great Western Highway is the much better option in terms of travel to Sydney and beyond.

Using this route, you have direct connection to the M4 and then the M7 and M2 or M5, and with the soon to be completed North Connex road, we will have a direct link to the M1, plus the completion of the West Connex will give us direct access into the Sydney CBD.

Of course the Great Western Highway route will also be the best option when the Badgery's Creek Airport comes on line.

Also, the incredible improvements that have been made to these roads over the past 28 years have made the trip to Sydney an increasingly enjoyable experience.

Also the government needs to be complimented on the recent improvements to the road between Lithgow and Blackheath, with the section through Mount Victoria almost completed.

I will continue to use the Great Western Highway and the motorway network in my travels to Sydney as I have found this to always be the most convenient and relatively fast way to commute to Sydney by car.

The only solution to improving the connection between Sydney and the Central West is an autobahn-type tunnel under the Blue Mountains connecting directly with the M4 motorway, but I cannot see this happening in my lifetime, purely from an expenditure point of view, let alone environmental concerns.

I don't think any of our politicians will be willing to pursue this exciting and visionary solution for a transport corridor from Sydney to the western areas of NSW.

Yours sincerely,

Bruce Hardy
