With the recent launch of the NSW Government’s Active Kids program, Mr Greenhalgh hopes the $100 voucher offered to parents for sports memberships will see more enrolments in clubs.

The rebate alllows parents to claim up to $100 for every school-age child every year, as a voucher to reduce the cost of sport registration or membership fees.

Parents have been able to register online from January 1.

Vouchers can to be used on sports such as netball, football or basketball; swimming classes or lessons; gymnastics or athletics.

“It’s a great initiative to get the kids who potentially haven’t had access to sports in the past active,” Mr Greenhalgh said.

“We know that kids often play multiple sports over summer and winter which of course can add up very quickly for parents.

“With a little luck this might even get kids trying a sport they’ve never tried.”

Nutritionist Jacqueline Jasprizza sees a lot of children and their families in her profession who are struggling to stay healthy and active.

“I see a lot of inactivity in young people and the reports of growing childhood obesity rates are really concerning,” Mrs Jasprizza said.

“I am a mother of three children who have always played a lot of sports – I understand how expensive it can be.”

The government is providing $207 million to be set aside over four years from 2018.

The annual rebate will not be means tested.

It will be available for every school child wanting to get involved in community sport and fitness.

“Physical activity for children should be fun and enjoyable and sports are generally a perfect fit,” Mrs Jasprizza said.

“We don’t want to blame or shame overweight children, we want to help them access the benefits of regular activity.”

Mrs Jasprizza said she’s hopeful Active Kids will have positive results.

“The physical, social and emotional benefits to be gained from playing sport is immeasurable,” Mrs Jasprizza said.

“Getting kids on courts and fields regularly can be what gives them their independence, confidence and autonomy.”
