Requests and inquiries by parents during school enrollments and an overwhelming response to a school survey could see another Orange school introduce out of hours care.

Catherine McAuley Catholic Primary School has been in discussions with CentaCare at Bathurst.

It is looking into the viability about introducing a service for before and after school care, and vacation care next year.

The school’s assistant principal Steve Maguire said there used to be out of hours care at Kenna hall that was for school children but not run by the school.

If approved, Mr Maguire said the new care program would be run by CentaCare.

“We have an application in and we are hoping it will be okayed,” Mr Maguire said.

“Families are crying out for after school care in Orange, and families when they make inquiries to the school, they ask about it.

“We [would] definitely be providing a service for the community … it’s become more and more popular I think its one of those things where there’s a real need for it here.”

Kinross Wolaroi School and Orange Anglican Grammar School provide services for their students, Calare and Orange Public Schools also run out of school hours care as does Anson Street School for children with disabilities.

The service at Orange Public School is at capacity and has a waiting list for next year.

The grammar school introduced out of hours care this year.

Principal Reverend Louis Stringer said Camp Australia runs the program for between eight and 24 children depending on the day.

“It’s been a very successful program for both before and after school care,” Reverend Stringer said.

“We have parents who are very busy with work and often its the case that both parents will have work.

“It just provides them with an opportunity to continue with their employment.”
