In CSU Bathurst coach Scott Hatch’s eyes, his club dropping back to Central West Rugby Union’s yet-to-be-named second tier next season won’t be a step backwards – quite the opposite in fact.

The students struggled through this season – just one of four grades featured in the finals – but Hatch was more than encouraged by the club’s performances, which leads him to predict the move to the two-team second tier could be the start of “something great” for CSU.
In short, he says it will provide the Mitchell Men with an opportunity to build a winning culture again, like what the club enjoyed through the noughties.
“Although we didn’t get the results on the field I was really proud of the blokes this year, they improved each week and as a coach that’s all you can really ask for,” Hatch said.
“I feel like this could be the beginning of something great for the club, I see the next two years in the second tier as an opportunity to create a winning culture again.”
Hatch and the club will leave no stone unturned in their bid to do just that, and are already calling out for expressions of interest for a number of coaching roles for next year.
The goal is to build a boom coaching team to continue building on the foundations Hatch put in place in 2017, and transform CSU into a “force to be reckoned with”.
CSU is looking for expressions of interest for a head coach, first and second grade coaches along with assistant coaches, managers, strength and conditioning coordinators, specialist coaches, trainers and general support staff for all grades.
That includes colts, in which the students will act as Cowra’s under 20s side in the top tier Blowes Clothing Cup.
“Scott did an outstanding job this year, as a CSU old boy he’s very focused on culture and what it means to be playing for the club, he’s really helped set the groundwork for coming years,” CSU’s new president Josh Buttenshaw said.
“Hatchy is trying to build a dynasty so the club will have a major focus on the future (in 2018). We want to build up the belief that we can win and we think that’s very possible with the way the competition will be structured next season,” CSU club captain Nick Plunkett added.
