A post on the organisation’s Facebook page on Monday announced the closure, stating the services formerly offered from the Glenroi Avenue address – including the provision of donated household goods to those in need – would “cease immediately”.
According to the post there will be “several services still in operation from our secondary site”, with the organisation’s crisis accommodation facility on Peisley Street to remain operational, along with its time-banking, lawn mowing and employment-inclusion programs.
“We wish to thank all of those amazing people who have supported and believed in Pay It Forward and want you to know we are still here in the community offering services, they will just be in a different way,” the statement read.
The financial strain on the organisation at Glenroi Avenue has just become too much … and we cannot continue to offer these services.”
On October 2 this year thieves smashed their way through a glass sliding door at the site before stealing a cash register and money, the third theft inflicted on the premises in the space of 10 months.
While less than $200 was taken, the clean up and recovery cost thousands, which left founder Karlie Irwin questioning whether the charity enterprise would continue.
In the following week the Orange community responded with a raft of donations – including several security measures – in hopes of keeping the Glenroi premises open, but Monday’s announcement means those efforts were in vain.
Mrs Irwin said Pay It Forward – which started in late 2015 – would “move forward in different directions” after the closure.
“It has been my pleasure to have been able to offer this amazing support to the community I live in,” she said.
“The smiles, the tears, the frustration, the anger and the people who have walked away amazed at how supported they have been, all of this will remain with me.
“We will bounce back in no time, just in a different way.”
