The field days are serving as testing ground for Telstra’s portable Wi-Fi towers which connect to their mobile network.

It means internet access, social media and using EFTPOS machines will be possible in the paddock.

ANFD manager Jayne West said the Wi-Fi was another way to attract visitors to the event, as well allowing exhibitors and visitors to make a deal on the day.

“We have a mobile ready app and website, if people get lost, they can find their way around but also find particular exhibitors or products,” Mrs West said.

“It sets us apart from other field days in terms of being able to showcase it and have it on site.”

Telstra area general manager Mike Marom said it was the first time the technology had been used during field days.

“We’ve used it at music festivals like Splendour in the Grass. It’s a first for the field days,” Mr Marom said.

“By providing free Wi-Fi, we’re providing the best possible experience irrespective of [mobile] network providers.”

Mr Marom said Telstra’s had commitment to regional areas and the Wi-Fi towers were about providing regional areas with world best technology.

He said the towers could handle thousands of users.

As well as free Wi-Fi access, Mr Marom said the telco was rolling out drones to assist technicians with maintenance and repair of mobile towers.

He said following the devastating Sir Ivan bushfire near Dunedoo, drones were used to inspect mobile towers and at some locations service was restored in 48 hours.

Previously, a crew of four using a cherry picker would inspect a mobile tower.

“It could take you a few days to actually just inspect a tower, let alone repair it and restore services,” Mr Marom said.

With the drones able to fly up to 120 metres, Mr Marom said it could mean technician could start inspecting towers even if they didn’t have access.
