Magistrate David Day gave the advice to Sharon Maree Sorensen, 47, in Orange Local Court when he sentenced her to jail with a parole date of March 10 next year, to be followed by a three year good behaviour bond.

Mr Day made it a requirement of the bond that Sorensen obey community corrections orders in regards to drug rehabilitation after previous failed attempts.

“At your age if you want to take drugs, next time you come to court it will be a coroner in chambers … you will kill yourself, it’s a matter for you, you can’t say I won’t give you the opportunity [for rehabilitation],” Mr Day said.

Sorensen, formerly of Lawson Crescent, was sentenced to 12 months’ jail with a six-month non-parole period dating from September 9 to March 10, 2018, after she withdrew $1,580 from her housemate’s bank account after he was hospitalised and then died. 

Sorensen’s housemate was declared dead on December 23, two days after he was rushed to hospital.

Although Sorensen returned his belongings to his family members, when they went to close his bank account on January 10, and withdraw any remaining money, they discovered the account was empty.

An investigation revealed Sorensen had made six withdrawals from the account between 9.10am on December 22 and 8.45pm on January 9.

Sorensen was also sentenced to seven months’ jail, with four months to be served without parole between June 22 and October 21 this year, for breaching a suspended jail sentence.

She was given a seven-month suspended jail sentence after appealing a longer sentence in Orange District Court last year, for supplying heroin in Lucknow on July 31, 2015. 

The three-year good behaviour bonds were given to her after she was caught shoplifting $46 worth of batteries from and Orange shopping centre and $30 worth of batteries from an Orange department store on June 22.
