I FIND it amazing that rates notices were issued and there was not one comment from a ratepayer of the increases in charges by Orange City Council.

Speaking personally our business rates have increased by a hefty $648 per annum inclusive, which is an approximately 11 per cent increase over last year’s.
What will be their explanation: the valuer general’s department has revalued all the properties in Orange and increasing them?
I know council has a confusing system of working rates out, but an 11 per cent increase to me seems over the odds when inflation is around the 2 per cent mark.
I and all other business owners can’t just put up prices by 10 per cent.
On top of this I choose to live in Orange as well so my house rates have also had a similar increase.
Basically, I need a second job to pay all this imposed upon me, as I have tried pulling it out of my pocket but it is empty.
Remember this affects everybody: businesses, home owners and renters alike.
We have a record field running for council and none that I know of have a policy to lower rates.
We don’t need council acting as developers and using rates to pay for it.
