Orange City Council considered a notice of motion from councillors Reg Kidd and Ron Gander on Tuesday night, asking for the former netball courts to become untimed, free parking.
Cr Gander said there was “an enormous amount” of motorists seeking parking during the festive season.
“We’re short on parking for working people,” he said.
With the idea raised previously, councillors supported it, but they did not stop there.
We need to make [spaces] more centralised and more usable with a multi-storey car park
- Councillor Jeff Whitton
Councillor Jeff Whitton asked for the council to approach the ex-services’ club about a possible joint venture to build a multi-storey car park on Sale Street, where the council also owned land and provided ground car spaces.
“With the news of the state government giving funding for community projects, it’s probably worth looking at the spaces, we need to make them more centralised and more usable with a multi-storey car park,” he said.

Councillor Neil Jones also asked for an audit of the CBD to identify parking needs for business owners, staff and customers.
He identified the council car park and parking areas at the rear of the Hotel Canobolas and the cultural centre as particular concerns.
“This is a good time to bring it up and get it back to the new council to resolve something positive,” he said.
The club has previously earmarked its land for the remainder of its $25 million, 15-year master plan, which includes a four-storey car park with 750 extra parking spaces.
It is in the final stages of building the $3 million Greenhouse development on its former bowling greens.
Club chief executive officer Cameron Provost said the club was open to looking at the idea of sharing car park space across the two sites.
“There would be obvious opportunities to deliver more parking spaces if a joint project was explored.”
