Get behind us: Magpies coach calls for support from Cowra | Photos

Magpies coach Rory Brien is calling for the public to get behind his Group 10 side ahead of its round seven match against Bathurst Panthers this Sunday.

Cowra is fourth on the competition ladder having recorded three wins during the opening six rounds, giving Brien strong belief the Magpies will feature in this year’s finals.

This Sunday marks the club’s fifth home game of the year, its fourth in a row, and the coach is encouraging the town’s people to flood Sid Kallas Oval in effort to help the Magpies across the line.

“We know Panthers are going to be a tough task. We’re going to need some good support,” Brien said.

“We’re coming good at the right time of the year and if we can keep it up I have no doubt we’ll play finals.

“Come and support us. We will go well. And with the support of the town behind us the boys will fire.”

Cowra enters this week’s match riding the momentum of back to back victories against Lithgow Workies and Bathurst St Pat’s.

In 2016, the Magpies didn’t string two games together.

“Everyone’s been good. I’ve been really impressed with attitude,” Brien said.

“If they want to do it, they’ll do it. As long as they know they’re a good football side they’ll continuing performing.”

Brien has been dealt a set-back with news Warren Williams is facing at least four weeks on the sideline having torn his calf muscle against St Pat’s.

Zac Browne injured his knee in the same game and will also miss this week.

“Panthers are a big pack. They have a lot of strength in the forwards and we’re a bit depleted with injuries but we have plenty of blokes who can step up,” Brien said.

“At the start of the year we had a few new players and we had to work on our structure but we’re playing really well as a team.

“Watching us you can see the improvement.”

Cowra and Panthers face-off from about 2.30pm this Sunday afternoon.

The Cowra and Panthers clash also marks the first Chad Nealon Shield encounter of 2017.

The results from each grade count towards each club’s total.

Money from the day’s raffle will go to the Nealon family who recently lost their home in a fire.
