A professional opera singer was among the 137 Charles Sturt University (CSU) students who graduated in Orange on Wednesday.
In front of about 500 friends and family members, students from the Faculty of Arts and Education, Faculty of Business, Justice and Behavioural Sciences, and Faculty of Science attended the graduation ceremony at the Derek Pigot Auditorium at Kinross Wolaroi School.
Among the most popular disciplines were dental science and physio therapy.
CSU Orange head of campus Dr Heather Robinson said graduation was one of the highlights of the academic year.
“I am pleased to help celebrate the achievements of graduates at Orange and wish them success as they join the professions for which they have trained," she said.
Among the graduates was professional opera singer Helen Barnett of Orange, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science (major in nutrition).
Ms Barnett was also awarded a University Medal and was selected to make the vote of thanks address at the ceremony.
Ms Barnett worked with Opera Australia on and off for 15 years but with a young family in Orange found it wasn't feasible in the long-term.
With health and nutrition as her other real interest and passion, she decided to go back to university to become a dietitian.
“I was standing at my bookshelf one day and thinking I’m commuting to Sydney trying to be an opera singer and with a young family it’s hard work,” she said.
“Half my book shelf was music and half was for nutrition.”
Deciding to follow a medical nutrition science path she found her music background helped when it came to memorising scientific terms and information.
Ms Barnett received the annual Deans Award each year of her CSU studies, and also received the biochemistry prize for 2015.
“It as a surprise coming from a non science background and not having done any science for the HSC and finding I really liked the hard science and winning the biochemistry award,” she said.
Adam Roach and Jesse Baganam both graduated from five years of study as part of the bachelor of dental science.
“I’m going to be working down at Hunder New England Health in Newcastle,” Mr Roach said.
He said there will also be satellite clinics at Cessnock, Maitland and Toronto.
Mr Baganam has found work at Auckland City Hospital.
CSU Council member Jamie Newman was presiding officer and the occasional dress was delivered by CSU Faculty of Arts and Education executive dean Professor Lesley White.
