The region’s wineries have shone brightly at the NSW Wine Awards in Sydney, with six of the 18 trophies awarded going to wines made in or with fruit from the Orange area.

For the second year in a row Colmar Estate claimed the trophy for best young riesling at the awards.
“NSW Wine Awards are where we like to be. If you can score there, you’re doing alright,” owner Bill Shrapnel said.
Mr Shrapnel and wife Jane made a tree change to Orange several years ago and have been working to develop quality wine ever since.
They’ve kept the yield of their vines low and then handpicked all the fruit, before sorting it by hand again.
Mr Shrapnel said the labour and cost-intensive process was behind the vineyard’s success.
Brangayne’s Sauvignon Blanc was another trophy winner.
“It’s NSW’s most important wine show, [the wine] got a trophy at the Orange Wine Show and to win in NSW is particularly good,” Brangayne’s co-owner David Hoskins said.
Mr Hoskins doubted the vineyard’s success with Sauv Blanc could be replicated at another location.
“It’s great Orange has come up so well in this showcase, a lot of Orange fruit has gone into a lot of trophy wines,” he said.
Tamburlaine Organic Wines had their efforts rewarded with two trophies for a Malbec.
Executive director Jonathan Scott said winning the best organic wine category was tough as the competition could be any type of wine.
“NSW has got everything, from cool climates and high altitudes through to broad-acre production and everything in between,” Mr Scott said.
Tulloch Wines won two trophies for best young white and light red, both of which used fruit grown in the Orange region.
