Emergency services were called to the scene about 4.40pm on Saturday after the 4WD left Renshaw McGirr Way and hit a tree.
A passing motorist saw the crash and stopped to assist.
Despite seeing the 4WD on fire, the man smashed a window and removed a nine-year-old boy from the front passenger seat, then went back and rescued the driver, a 44-year-old man.
The vehicle was then engulfed in flames and destroyed.
The injured man and boy were treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics at the scene before being airlifted to Sydney.
The boy is in The Children’s Hospital at Westmead while his father is in Westmead Hospital.
Their condition is unknown.
Officers from Orana Local Area Command continue with their investigations into the circumstances leading up to the crash.
