Led by talented captain and opening batsman Blake Weymouth the Orange under 14s squad was undefeated, brushing aside teams from Bathurst, Dubbo and the Lachlan region to win the tournament last Thursday.
Weymouth scored a total of 145 runs in the three games, two of which he retired from unbeaten after reaching 50 runs, and the other he was run out.
“This is the first time Orange has won it,” coach Andrew Litchfield said.
He said the tournament helped identify top junior talent in the region of which he believes there was now plenty in Orange.
“There’s some talented players within the squad which is exciting. The depth is good,” Litchfield said.
“These boys were picked from a squad of 24 players that have done an Orange under-14 rep winter training program at Kinross. This season we are entering two under-14 teams in the Mitchell competition which is another first.”
He said that also meant that an extra 12 boys would receive coaching at a higher level than if they had stuck with one team.
The tournament started last Tuesday by bowling out Bathurst for 59. Nick Warburton and Lachie Smith took three wickets while Hugh McIntyre grabbed two.
In reply Weymouth hit 51 before retiring not out. Hugh Middleton scored 38 as the team sailed to victory at 4-163 off their 45 overs.
The next day they played Dubbo Blue. Weymouth again topped the scoring on 38 before being run out while Smith (37 not out) and Middleton (32 not out) helped amass an impressive 5-172.
In reply Dubbo could manage only 86 with Harry McGregor claiming 3-14 and McIntyre, Warburton and Tom Pearce grabbing two wickets each.
The final against the Lachlan Cricket Council was a much closer encounter.
After winning the toss Orange sent Lachlan in and they scored 6-116. Ethan Wilson picked up two wickets for Orange.
In reply Weymouth hit 56 not out and Harry West scored 45 to set up a victory total of 5-134 off 39 overs.
