It was an accident with a truck that inspired former Orange resident Alice Mabin to write a book about the people who keep Australia moving. The Driver is Ms Mabin’s second book after she wrote The Drover.

She spent 18 months criss-crossing the country in trucks, speaking to owner-drivers, family businesses and drivers for corporations.
“They’re all getting product from the farm-gate to the factory and from the factory to the shop,” she said.
“Without trucks, Australia stops and here is the evidence. I had never stopped to think that everything comes on the back of a truck, clothes, food and cars.”
Ms Mabin spoke to and photographed more than 110 different types of loads, whether it’s Manildra flour, McDonald’s beef patties or wool from farms.
The book has been self-published by Ms Mabin who is handling, sales, distribution as well as production. It’s available from Camera House, Greengate News agency and Collins Booksellers.
