Fifteen year 11 students and three teachers will head off to Mannar and Colombo in Sri Lanka for two weeks to help students in 10 schools run by the De La Salle brothers Catholic teaching order.
Teacher Robyn Stevens said the trip was intended to assist those less fortunate and open students’ eyes to life in other countries.
”It’s good for the students to see how difficult it is for students in different regions and see cultural differences,” Ms Stevens said.
“It’s rewarding to see how hard the students work and how concerned they are about the students’ education,”

“The students work with students and teachers in primary schools and prepare lesson plans.”
Ms Stevens said the trip was a part of the school community’s ongoing commitment to social justice.
“We hope the students become involved in other social justice activities,” Ms Stevens said.
“They’re very involved now and we hope it develops into a lifelong interest.”
Ms Stevens said the annual mission was self-funded and students had raised funds from terms one to three.
“We’ve been fundraising to buy resources for the school and all of the money we raise goes to the schools” she said.
The De La Salle brothers have a strong association with James Sheahan Catholic High School and founded the school alongside the Sisters of Mercy.
Teachers in Mannar schools target illiteracy and poverty alleviation through improving access to education.
There is also a focus on skills development through vocational training programs and agricultural programs targeting youth unemployment.
In Colombo schools, programs focus on vocational skills, health and nutrition and special education.
A fundraising high tea will be held on Saturday, August 13 at the CWA Hall in Robertson Park.
There will be two high tea sessions held at 11am and 2.30pm.
Tickets are $20 each and can be booked through the James Sheahan Catholic High School office.
