NOW six-time Wentworth club champion Craig Coles showed there's no substitute for experience on Sunday, defeating 2015 title-winner Mitch Williamson in a nail-biting decider to claim the 2016 A grade match-play championship.
He came into the final in enviable form but Coles was forced to claw his way back from four down against the reigning champion, before the pair ended up all square on the 18th green - the second time around - forcing a play-off.
Coles held his nerve to card an even-par four on the 270m first hole, while Williamson bogeyed it.
"You don't get sick of winning them, I'm not getting any younger so to get a win over one of the younger guys is good too," Coles said.
"We actually both played pretty good golf, it was a good win."
Williamson shot out to a four-up lead early on, but only held a one-up lead when the pair turned through 18.
Coles continued his fight-back, turning into the final nine with a one-hole advantage before Williamson squared things up and forced the play-off.
The 2016 title will be added to Coles' already bulging trophy cabinet, which includes A grade gongs from 1989, 2005 and 2013, along with a couple through the 1990s.
The No.4 qualifier, Coles beat out Jason Hurford, Jason Griffiths and Bruce Cousins on his way to the decider.
In A reserve Steve Hooper held off a defiant Gary Cornish to win 2 and 1 while Peter Moad held on to trump Dave Stonestreet 2 up in B grade.
Peter Heffernan hit the lead early in the his C grade grand final match-up with Sean Pleasance, and never relinquished top spot, ultimately claiming a comprehensive 8 and 7 victory.
Over at Ex-Services Country Club Dave Chippendale kept Marty Woods at bay to score a 3 and 1 victory and claim the 2016 A grade trophy, his third consecutive top grade championship win.
Along with the 2014 and 2015 titles, Chippendale won in 2009 as well.
In B grade Dale Lawrence beat out Mick Pickett, winning 7 and 6, while Andrew Smith downed Peter Powles 4 and 3 to win the C grade title.
