WESTERN Zone named its Bradman and Kookaburra Cup sides earlier this week, with four of Orange District Junior Cricket Association’s finest set to ply their trade in a royal blue cap.
Kinross’ Charlie Greer and Angus Cumming, along with Millthorpe’s Cohen Schubert, were named in the under-16 Bradman Cup side while Orange City young gun Lachlan Coyte was selected in the under-14 Kookaburra Cup side.
Greer, Cumming and Schubert will head to Newcastle mid-January to tackle the Bradman Cup carnival - the regional equivalent of Sydney’s Green Shield competition - while Coyte’s Kookaburra Cup side plays in Griffith, early next month.
The latter in particular is champing at the bit to pull on the royal blue cap, in what will be his Western Zone debut.
“I’m pretty excited, I’m pretty happy with myself really,” Coyte said.
“I wasn’t expecting to get picked really, I hadn’t performed all that well in the couple of games for Mitchell this year.”
“It’ll be my first time playing for Western, I’m really looking forward to it.”
Coyte managed scores of just 8 and 28 for Mitchell Cricket Council in this year’s under 14 Western Zone Inter-Council competition, but earned selection nonetheless, which he put down to his past experience and performances.
The 13-year-old has donned the black cap a number of times, and captained Mitchell’s under 13 during last year’s Western NSW Junior Carnival, along with spending the majority of this season in St Stanislaus College’s second XI.
“I think that experience and the way I’ve played in teams before must have helped a little bit,” Coyte said.
“I’m really just hoping to go there, score some runs and help my team win as much as possible.
“I’ll back us to go pretty close to winning it.”
Orange’s Blake Weymouth and Hugh Middleton, along with Mudgee’s Lachlan Endacott, were also named in the Western-Riverina Kangaroos under 13 side to compete at the Under 14 State Challenge in January.
The Kangaroos are a combined side, made up of Western and Riverina, with the under 13 side geared at developing the younger age players into potential Zone representatives the following season.
An under 14 Kangaroos side will also be named following the Kookaburra Cup final in Griffith, to compete at the same competition.
