At around 4.40pm a 31-year-old woman was travelling along the Mitchell Highway in a Hyundai Excel towards Bathurst when her vehicle left the roadway at a left-hand bend.
The Hyundai came to a stop after hitting a tree off the side of the road and the woman was trapped in her vehicle for around an hour.
Emergency services extricated the woman from the vehicle, before she was flown to Canberra Hospital.
Poor weather conditions had prevented the NSW Ambulance helicopter from flying over the Blue Mountains to a Sydney hospital.
Police officers from the Chifley Local Area Command are conducting an investigation into the incident.
Any witnesses who have not spoken to police are urged to come forward and contact their local police station or CrimeStoppers.
The Mitchell Highway was closed while emergency services worked on the woman and diversions were in place.
