The 2015 Hedberg Hill Guy’s Sauvignon Blanc won The Viticultural Society of the Southern Tablelands trophy for best sauvignon blanc at the show last week.
It was one of 15 wines from the Orange region that were awarded medals from 550 wines entered from cool climate regions across Australia.
He said the trophy was a pat on the back for Hedberg Hill and Madrez Wine Services, who made the wine.
“It’s received two medals from different shows now, so it’s good to have consistency across the board,” Mr Hedberg said.
“With a national tag, [the win] means more in consumers’ eyes than some of the other wine shows around, even though they are just as big.”
While 2015 Hedberg Hill Guy’s Sauvignon Blanc was the only wine awarded a gold medal, 2013 Montoro Wines Pepper Shiraz, 2015 Cooks Lot Wines Allotment 333 Riesling and 2014 Cooks Lot Wines Allotment 8 Handpicked Shiraz received silver medals.
Bronzes were awarded to 2014 Brangayne of Orange Isolde Reserve Chardonnay, 2014 Brangayne of Orange Sauvignon Blanc, 2013 Brangayne of Orange Isolde Reserve Chardonnay, 2013 Cumulus Wines Climbing Cabernet Sauvignon, 2013 Cumulus Wines Climbing Shiraz, 2014 Cumulus Wines Chardonnay, 2014 Ross Hill Wines Pinnacle Series Chardonnay, 2013 Ross Hill Wines Pinnacle Series Shiraz, 2014 Stockmans Ridge Wines Savagnin and 2014 Stockmans Ridge Wines Rider Shiraz and 2015 Cooks Lot Wines Allotment 689 Sauvignon Blanc.
Wine show senior judge Adrian Marchioro said Orange was fast becoming one of the best cool climate wine regions in Australia.
“Even though its young, it has a very good climate great for growing a variety of grapes. Over the years I’ve spoken to many winemakers from Orange and they’re quite confident Orange will become one of the premier wine regions in NSW, with a focus on sauvignon blancs,” Mr Marchioro.
“The Sauvignon Blancs produced in Orange are pristine, bright and have a full flavour.”
