CONSISTENCY was the key in David Hayward winning two bronze medals at the recent National Disabilities Tenpin Bowling Championship.
The deaf competitor finished third in the open men’s all events and open men’s masters at Brisbane’s Chermside Hyperbowl this month.
Hayward was happy with his performance across all the events.
The Orange bowler started with the mixed open doubles where he joined with Dennis Hobbs to finish ninth.
Hayward bowled games of 205, 254 and 200 for his 659 total, while Hobbs delivered 521.
In the mixed classic trios, the grade below open, Hayward teamed up with Jennifer McMahon and Vaughan Nilsson for fifth place.
Hayward was the best performed of the trio with his 206, 211, 212 handing him a 629 total in comparison to McMahon’s 403 and Nilsson’s 619.
The Orange bowler finished 12th in the open men’s singles on the back of his 652 total (216, 234, 202).
His consistency across the three events meant Hayward finished third in the open men’s all events.
Jeffory Butler took the gold with 2161, followed by Shane Hurst (1974) and Hayward (1940).
The Orange bowler then had a see-sawing qualifying round for the men’s masters event.
He started with a 141 game before bowling a 215. He backed this up with a 279, with only a nine-spare in the fourth frame preventing him from enjoying a perfect game.
From there he delivered games of 265, 214, 200, 231 and 256 for his 1801 total and 225.1 average.
This meant he qualified third for the stepladder final behind leader James Sitters (1813) and Butler (1812).
In the first stepladder match, Hayward was beaten by Butler 199-184.
Butler beat top qualifier Sitters 192-176, but Sitters claimed the repechage and masters title 237-192.
Hayward’s performance during the 10-day tournament also meant he attracted the attention of NSW team selectors who are keen for him to return to the state disabilities team.
For now, Hayward is unsure what he will do next, but said a rest might be a good option.
