Bunn burst into Wentworth Golf Club on the night of April 7, 2013 just as the club was closing with an accomplice, Joshua Gary Cooper, who held a sawn-off shotgun to the head of a terrified barman.
They forced the 49-year-old barman, who was the only person in the club at the time, to lie face down on the floor as they raided the till and stole the day’s takings.
The robbery was captured on CCTV footage recorded inside the clubhouse, and the footage was used as part of a public appeal for information and later as evidence in court after Bunn and Cooper were arrested.
Police described Bunn as “the mastermind” of the robbery, saying he had been sacked from the club for stealing more than $700. However, that was challenged in Orange Local Court by Bunn’s solicitor Michael Madden, who said his client had been let go from the club because of other charges he was already facing in the District Court.
Bunn will be eligible for release on parole as early as January 2016 after Judge Gordon Lerve imposed a non-parole sentence of two years and four months. His sentence was backdated from September 2013.
Cooper did not go to trial in Dubbo last week after a last-minute guilty plea and will be sentenced for the crime in May.
Both men pleaded guilty to robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon.
Cooper had bail refused until his sentencing hearing, which will also take place in Dubbo.
Bunn was sentenced on February 26 in Dubbo District Court, however at the time Judge Lerve placed a suppression order on reporting of the case so it did not prejudice Cooper’s potential trial .
However, after Cooper pleaded guilty the case proceeded to a sentencing hearing.
The driver of the getaway car used in the robbery, Benjamin James Woods, was sentenced to three years and three months in jail in August last year with a non-parole period of 16 months.
The sentence was backdated to May 2014.
