Two-time pairs division winners Tim Guy and Gus Tobin said it’s maintaining speed and being a good all-rounder.
The two Orange cyclists delivered winning results in 2013 and 2014 events to not only be the best pair, but to have the best finish overall.
Tobin said the key is making sure you have the right racing lines.
“That way you’re not wasting energy stuffing every corner and you can maintain your speed,” he explained.
“You’ve got to try and keep a nice tempo.”
Guy agreed, the way riders handle the technical sections can make a huge difference.
“If you refine those little bits then you’re shaving time off,” Guys said.
Guy added putting in some extra effort on the climbs pays off too.
“The first couple of [kilometres] are quite hilly. If you climb well you can gain time there,” Guy explained.
“It’s not so steep you can’t climb it. It’s steady but if you push you can be rewarded.”
In 2013 the pairing completed 10 laps in hot conditions in four hours and 24 minutes.
Last year it rained heavily before the event and turned the track to mud, but the duo was able to pump out nine laps in 4:21.37.
“Last year it bucketed down rain a few days before and the track was just a mud bath,” Tobin explained.
“It was one you’d never forget. It was a real test of endurance because you had to work doubly hard to keep your bike straight.
“The year before was stinking hot.”
Guy was quick to point out the Orange track caters for all abilities.
“You can go all out or you can do your own thing,” he said.
“The event has a great atmosphere. Everyone you go past has a smile on their face. The atmosphere is the best part.”
One thing that’s for certain is Guy and Tobin won’t be pairing up for this year’s Ginja Ninja.
Tobin is unable to visit after relocating to Melbourne.
“I would have loved to come back and have another crack,” Tobin said.
Guy was also disappointed he wouldn’t be teaming up with Tobin this weekend.
“Gus was that good, I was guaranteed the win. This is the first year there’s money in it too,” he laughed.
