Paramedics PJ Cox and Ian Spurway have worked in Orange for a combined 30 years and started up their own hypnotherapy business, Transform Clinical Hypnotherapy in November last year.
Among their clients are people looking for solutions to depression, weight gain, severe morning sickness, sleep apnoea and to quit smoking.
“One of our biggest sellers is gastric hypno banding. Through hypnosis the client believes they have had the banding done,” Mr Spurway said.
Ms Cox and Mr Spurway said they also had success with a woman who presented with hyperemesis gravidarum, a chronic form of morning sickness also suffered by Kate Middleton, where women can become dehydrated and require hospitalisation. They said their client was able to function better day to day and her symptoms had improved from the therapy.
Ms Cox said another client was also less dependent on a sleep apnoea machine after losing weight through the hypnotherapy, which they often paired with dietary plans and personal training sessions.
Ms Cox and Mr Spurway said they decided to pursue hypnotherapy as a health option having seen an increase in people with anxiety issues while working as paramedics.
They said it was about using the subconscious to overcome stress and it was nothing like the stage antics where people are made to cluck like chickens.
“They want to take ownership of their health. Where the mind goes they body will follow,” Mr Spurway said.
However, he said people needed to want to change for the treatment to be effective.
“In hypnosis we cannot make anyone do something they don’t want to do,” he said.
Tranform Clinical Hypnotherapy is registered with the Australian Hypnotherapy Association and the National Hypnotherapy Register of Australia. Ms Cox and Mr Spurway underwent academic studies before launching their clinic and are currently undertaking their advanced diplomas.
“Hypnotherapy is as old as man itself. The ancient Egyptians used it in their sleep temples, it’s all to do with your mind, everything is in your subconscious,” Ms Cox said.
