With just three games left in the men’s Premier League Hockey season Wanderers sit fifth, just two points adrift of the top four.
Wanderers have an enviable run to the finals, playing fourth-placed Parkes United Saturday before taking on third-placed Bathurst Souths and cellar dwellers Lithgow Zig-Zag in the final regular season round.
The Orange side dropped to fifth after last weekend’s 4-nil loss to Lithgow Panthers, and evergreen defender Andrew Rutledge said with one of the easier runs home his side wants to break back into the top four, and feature in the play-offs.
“Potentially we can finish third if we win our last three games, which we’re definitely capable of,” Rutledge said.
“Realistically fourth is our option, but finishing third would get us a home semi-final. From here, our aim is to win our last three games and make sure we’re there at play-off time.
“That starts [today] against Parkes.”
Rutledge said his side was left to lament lazy ball movement and turnovers in abundance the last time it took on Parkes, in round eight.
Wanderers lost that clash 4-3, and Rutledge said his side has no plans to repeat the performance.
“I was actually away for that game, but the boys told me Parkes took advantage of our mistakes, which won’t happen again,” he said, confidently.
“Everyone has gradually worked into our systems, and we’re comfortable in them now.
“If we control possession and convert our opportunities, which we haven’t been doing, we’ll be fine. We will win if we do that.”
Wanderers host Parkes at Orange Hockey Centre, from 3.55pm today.
