The brainchild of McGrath agent Bernadette Berlyn, the appeal earlier this month called for the donation of good-quality coats, with drop-off points around Sydney.
Thanks to celebrity support and donations from television hosts Karl Stefanovic, Richard Wilkins and David Koch, as well as the Rabbitohs Rugby League Club, the event was a massive success.
Mrs Berlyn said such a successful campaign enabled the Salvos’ city branches to reach out to regional areas such as Orange and Bathurst.
Orange asked for 100 coats to allocate to those in need, while Bathurst was allocated 300.
“We have all kinds of coats for men, women, children and they’ll fit all shapes and sizes,” Salvation Army major Karen Saunders said.
“Obviously the coats are not for just anyone, but those assessed as welfare clients who present with a need for them will make use of them.
“With winter temperatures here, we’ll certainly make the most of this generous donation and we’ve been surprised at how good quality these coats are.”
Mrs Saunders said the coats would go in a matter of weeks, but the Salvation Army still needed blankets, coats and any type of warm clothing as demand grew in these icy temperatures.
She encouraged people to think of others and make a donation.
