BUSINESS owner Caroline Pitney says upgrades to Clergate Road are desperately needed and a recent speed limit reduction will do little to ease drivers’ concerns over the road’s safety.

Ms Pitney, who owns Integra Health and Fitness Club in Ralston Drive, says Clergate Road is full of potholes and unable to cope with increased traffic flow in the area.
“Traffic on the road has quadrupled in the past five years,” Ms Pitney said.
“It’s an industrial area up here and there are hundreds of cars coming here every day.
“It’s not the safest road but we’ve been lucky enough not to have had any [major] incidents.”
Ms Pitney said while Clergate Road usage has increased in recent years, poor weather conditions have also taken their toll on the road’s surface.
“The road is just falling apart,” she said.
Ms Pitney said she had no opinion on whether the dropping of the speed limit on a section of Clergate Road was a good move.
“I’m not fazed one way or another,” she said.
Roads and Maritime Services staff recently carried out a review of the road as part of an ongoing speed zone review program in response to a request from Orange City Council staff.
The review concluded that the existing speed limit should be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h between the Clergate Road intersections with Northern Distributor Road and Quartz Street.
