The smooth approval was a stark contrast to the decade-long debate in council about if and where the toilet should be built and what it should look like.
Councillor Glenn Taylor said last week he hoped, if approved, the toilet could be fully operational by summer.
“You can’t expect people to cross the road to go to the visitors’ centre,” he said.
“That is a busy road. How can you expect parents with prams and the elderly to cross in Byng Street?”
The application approved on Tuesday night recommended the toilet facility be built on the eastern side on the park, along McNamara Street.
The design will deliver a facility with two general cubicles and one cubicle for people with a disability that can also be used as a family room and for general use.
Council staff settled on the location along McNamara St because they decided it would have the least impact on the park and it would provide central access.
