Greg Pringle, a former police officer, has been handling and catching snakes for almost 40 years.
"I doubt it was a King Brown as the man described, as in all my years I have never seen one in Orange.
"There is an abundance of Copperheads here, which I think this snake probably was. But the best thing to do is to not go near them, just leave them alone."
The man was treated at Orange hospital for any ill effects, but later discharged himself.
The CWD has contacted the RSPCA and Orange Police to ascertain if any charges of cruelty are to be laid against the man.
