In Saturday’s opening day’s play at Wade Park, CYMS were able to post a 275 total from 70 overs.
There were only four players who didn’t make double figures for CYMS which pleased captain Trent Colley.
“We posted a competitive total,” Colley said.
“It was more about keeping wickets in hand early. Everyone chipped in.”
Chris Novak (15) and John Warrington (34) put on 48 for the first wicket before Warrington and Dave Neil (18) pushed the side to 80.
Luke Clarke came in at number four and posted a dominant 71 which included nine fours and two sixes.
Clarke and Nick Wright (45) had a 101-run fifth-wicket partnership.
Colley praised young teammates Jack Sharpe (37 not out) and Pat Madden (20) for putting on 45 runs for the ninth wicket.
“There was a good partnership between the young guys, Sharpie and Pat Madden, at the end which was pleasing.
“It was a good way to finish our innings,” Colley said.
The CYMS wickets were shared between the Centrals bowlers with Jarrod Simpson (2-37), Chris Hutchinson (2-43), Dan Sandford (2-44) and Matt Weller (2-74) taking two each.
Centrals captain Jarrod Simpson said the side turned in an improved performance with the ball.
“We bowled really well early on and just before the tea break,” Simpson explained.
“We went flat for the 10 overs after tea. It was just a couple of bad balls an over as well as good batting.
“We were a lot better than last week which is good.”
One area which did let Centrals down was their fielding.
“We dropped too many catches,” Simpson said.
“We dropped seven or eight. That’s like bowling a team out twice.”
Centrals had to bat eight overs late in the day and finished at 2-21 with Matt Tedeschi (4) and Jake Pauletto (5) having limited time in the middle.
Chris Hutchinson (3 not out) and Simpson (2no) will return to the crease this Saturday and try to get the Centrals’ innings on track.
Sam Dwyer (1-5) and Hamish Finlayson (1-2) took a wicket each.
Centrals need 276 to win and Simpson believes it’s not out of reach.
“I think we can get the runs,” he said.
“It’s gonna take something that we haven’t done since the grand final which is just get in there and bat and not worry about much else. It’s a good challenge.”
CYMS will be doing everything they can to prevent the defending champions from scoring their second win of the season.
“For us next week, we need to find a bit with the new ball and try to take three early wickets,” Colley said.
“That would make them five down and it’s tough to come back from there.”
