The Orange cage fighter took out the XFC Australian amateur middleweight title in Brisbane by submission over Jim Hireme.

The bout was meant to go over three three-minute rounds but Quarmby only needed one minute and 20 seconds to make Hireme, who had previously been undefeated in four bouts, submit.

“I took him down and put what’s called a guillotine on him. It’s like a choke. He submitted,” Quarmby explained.

That’s not to say it was an easy bout.

“He came out with a Southpaw action which put me off at the start for a second. I worked him out,” Quarmby said.

“There were only a few shots in it. He put me on the fence and then I got the guillotine on him and he submitted.”

The win means Quarmby is undefeated in his four amateur cage fights with one victory by knock out and three by submission.

The 26-year-old was confident of maintaining his unbeaten record going into Saturday’s fight due to the intense training he enjoyed in Brazil earlier this year.

It was Quarmby’s first fight back after suffering serious injuries in a cage fight in March.

Quarmby sustained fractures to his left eye socket and cheekbone as well as cuts to his eye lid when his opponent pinned him against the cage and kneed him in the head.

The Orange fighter said he came out of Saturday’s bout without injury.

“I feel good. I hurt myself more in the change room warming up on the carpet where I took skin off,” he laughed.

Quarmby, who has started his own gym called MMA United, will now prepare for his professional debut in February.

“I’ll have to take it to the next level,” he said.

“There’s a lot of guys fighting pro, so I’ll have to step up. I’ll have to train harder.”
