In the lockup to bail kids out of trouble

A NUMBER of Orange identities will put themselves behind bars on Tuesday in the effort to raise funds for the PCYC.

During Time 4 Kids community leaders do time to keep kids out of crime and raise funds over Youth Week.

There is a range of people choosing to get locked up in the name of charity, from sports identities, real estate agents and one of the Central Western Daily’s own journalists Nick McGrath.

They will go behind bars at Orange Central with each jailbird required to collect $500 in donations to make bail.

“We have some very generous community leaders willing to take the lead and do some time and help us raise funds for our police programs and equipment needs at the club,” Orange PCYC club manager Mark Johnson said.

“The Orange PCYC joins all PCYCs around NSW running a Time 4 Kids event as we aim to pass the benchmark we set last year in funds raised.”

During last year’s event $4700 was raised with a fitness program implemented for teenage boys in the the Orange community.

Mr Johnson said 32 teenagers aged 14 to 17 were involved in the Pathways program which included a six month fitness training program mentored by a rugby league player.

“It’s got to be better for people to have that than just going down the street,” he said.

“It increased their self esteem and all of a sudden they get a purpose.”

During their time behind bars tomorrow community members will be calling on friends, family and business contacts to bail them out of a makeshift PCYC jail.

Ray White Real Estate principal Lan Snowden is just one community member getting going behind bars for a good cause.

“Not everyone has the upbringing I’ve had so it’s nice to help those a little less fortunate,” he said.

Canobolas Local Area Command, Senior Constable Helen Baker said the fundraiser helps support the Orange PCYC in its need for key pieces of equipment.

“This is a great chance for the community to help fund the important programs I run to get kids out of crime,” she said.

Mr Johnson said they hope to run another fitness program for teens following the event .

Time 4 Kids will be held at Orange Central on tomorrow from 9am to noon.
