ATHLETICS
ZONE carnival one day, state the next.
That's the path 44 athletes from the Orange Little Athletics Centre Inc. hope to take at Mudgee this weekend.
The zone carnival is the first step in the qualification process for state, with Orange athletes favoured to do well.
A great bunch of sprinters is developing in under 9 boys with Luke Petraglia, Ryan Griffin and Todd Murphy sure to run well at Mudgee.
Former state qualifiers Tom Satterthwaite and Nick Rutherford are ones to watch in the under 11 boys in the longer distance events and the sprints respectively.
Hayden Morrow (under 12 boys) is progressing well in high jump and Jeremy Bolton is tipped to excel in the under 7s.
The Jasprizza sisters Charlotte (under 10s) and Brigette (under 8s) have been leading the way in their age groups at training and Molly Satterthwaite (under 9s) is another who has been starring in the sprints.
Clare Murphy is another strong contender in the under 7 age group.
Athletes are able to enter four events at Mudgee where the first three placegetters in the 8s-15s age groups qualify for the regional carnival at Sanctuary Point in February. From there the top three in each event (9s-15s) go through to the state carnival at Homebush next March.
