Visitors shoot round of ages

PORT Macquarie octogenarians Harry Davenport and Frank Roberts provided the talking points of yesterday's second round in the Orange Veterans Classic.

Davenport, 83, achieved the feat of shooting less than his age at Ex-Services yesterday when he hit an 80 off stick while Frank Roberts, who is 81, just missed out with an 81. The pair have 12 handicaps.

Stableford, handicap and scratch trophies are being offered in the 54 hole tournament, the final round of which is on Thursday with the men going to Wentworth and the ladies at Duntryleague.

Leading the mens A grade scratch is Mona Vale's Bob Paton with 154 after the two rounds from Ashley Harrison (Tenterfield) on 154 and Wentworth's Dave Wright on 158.

In B grade, Muree's Don Austen is leading with 166 from Robert Harrison from Port Kembla (166) while in C grade Alan Josey from Mollymook has a 10 shot gap on Les Kable from Lithgow.

After the second day of play in the Ladies tournament Mollymook's Eve Jones is the overall leader on 79 stableford points.

Three players are close behind on her 77 points, Wentworth's Peg Madden, Blayney's Margaret Smith and Wauchope's Monica Wren.

Madden is also leading the division one competition while, Jones heads division two and Wren division three.

Today, vets take a break from their 54 hole competition with a rest day.
