The student was attending the transition day last week at Canobolas Rural Technology High School, where they will begin secondary education next year.
"The school was informed by an older student that when he discovered that the boy had left his bike offsite, he informed him he needed to put it in the bike cage, but he refused and left the bike where it was," said a spokesperson for the school.
The spokesperson said the school provided a bike cage where bikes and scooters "should be stored during the day".
"The cage is locked by a staff member each morning and unlocked at the end of the school day."
The spokesperson said that to "further improve security, the school has been discussing providing individual locks for bikes left in the locked cage".
Parents have been calling out bike and scooter thefts on social media, with one parent saying two scooters were stolen recently from Orange Aquatic Centre.
Acting inspector Susan Mackenzie from Orange Police said theft of bikes and scooters wasn't common.
"It happens on the odd occasion; if something is sitting unsecured I suppose it becomes more inviting.
"The best recommendation is to secure items if you can't retain them with you."
