The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)  and Cabonne Shire Council said the access roads to the summit had reopened this week, but the rest of the Mount Canobolas State Conservation Area would remain closed as native plants and animals continue to recover from bushfire.

NPWS Ranger Steve Woodhall said a couple of good gentle falls of rain have enabled some new leaves and grasses to sprout.

“We should see more of this in coming weeks, before the cold weather starts to take hold,” he said.

“Leaves falling from stressed trees are providing welcome ground cover for lizards and other species, while we’ve also seen plenty of birds, wallabies and kangaroos.

“It’s good to see signs of recovery, but there is still a long way to go.

“All walking tracks will remain closed while repairs are made.

“We have identified 145 dangerous standing or downed trees that need clearing.  

“About 10 kilometres of tracks have been damaged by the fire including most timber steps, drains and a bridge, which need replacing.

“Over the Easter weekend NPWS rangers will be at the summit to talk to visitors and answer questions.”

Cabonne Council has carried out work on Old Canobolas Road including clearing drains and  fire-affected trees.
