Desi Aussies of Orange president Vijay Bohra said about 70 people gathered for the fun day of food and music on March 11.
“This is the colour festival of India and we all celebrate it at Lake Canobolas every year to bring the community together,” he said.
Mr Bohra said it was one of the two major festivals, alongside Diwali the Hindu festival of lights, celebrated in India and by expatriate Indian communities around the world.
In India both festivals are major holidays.
“It’s a colour festival and we get different colours and put them on each other,” he said.
Mr Bohra said they used coloured powders which washed off skin and clothes easily.
The festival celebrates colour, love and the changing of seasons.
In India it celebrates the beginning of spring.
