A World’s Greatest Shave event was hosted at the Metropolitan Hotel on Friday night, where Kim Priest shed her locks.
The night raised $1046, well above the $700 target.
People bid to cut off Miss Priest’s hair, with her first ponytail attracting a $50 donation, her second $20 and the right to shave her head $100.
Friend and co-organiser Jacqui Camilleri was excited with the result.
The pair met through work and developed a fast bond so when Miss Priest decided to shave her head, Miss Camilleri was only too happy to help.
Both women’s mothers had undergone cancer treatment when they were growing up, but while Miss Priest’s mother came through her illness, Miss Camilleri’s died just before her daughter’s 19th birthday.
Miss Camilleri spoke of the importance of family support when a loved one underwent treatment, recalling her CanTeen camps.
“It’s a really nice thing to have other people you can lean on who know exactly how you feel and what’s going on in your life,” she said.
She hoped the money for the Leukaemia Foundation would go to family and patient support, as well as research for a cure.
