“It sounded like a shotgun going off,” Mr Perry said.
Old spray-paint tins had burst, mixing with other chemicals in the work shed.
The resulting blaze brought a community buzzing together – Mr Perry describes neighbours rushing over in the space of minutes – one, Harry Sharpless, jumping onto the roof to prevent any embers catching.
Many people pulled over while driving past to offer help, and a group of older women also stopped to help Mrs Perry, who was “a bit panicky”.
“They came up to find if she was alright and hugged her,” he said.
Mr Perry didn’t catch the names of the strangers who came in to help and wanted to give them some recognition.
“The volunteer [firefighters] were also fantastic … nothing could have gone better.”
