St Mary and St Joseph Parish priest Father Greg Bellamy said Shrove Tuesday marks the day before the start of Lent.
Father Greg said Lent is the 40-day period before Easter and traditionally people stopped eating eggs, sugar and dairy during that period but also do more charity work and pray more often.
“The day before it began they used up extra food they weren’t going to eat, by making pancakes,” he said.
“Shrove Tuesday has been going for at least 1000 years, shrove is from the word shrive which means to repent of sins.”
As well as eating pancakes he said people should attend confession.
