Applications for the Kokoda Youth Leadership Challenge (KYLC) are now open, with the Orange Ex-Services’ Club offering two sponsored places on the walk for two of Orange’s young leaders.
Previous participant Sarah Lauff said the trip was “life-changing, amazing, inspiring; all that sort of stuff”.
“We learnt a lot more about the history and what the diggers went through and how lovely they are. Learning about the local culture, how lovely everyone is and I was also doing it for my pop, who fought there at 18,” she said.
Her fellow trekker in 2015, Maddy Hawthorne said for her, the trip hadn’t been about the physical side of the gruelling 10-day hike.
“It’s about the challenge of trying to do it and see what our troops did and trying to understand the history,” she said.
Orange Ex-Services’ Club CEO Cameron Provost said the experience was aimed at young people aged 17-25 who wanted to “develop and learn and understanding themselves” and about the history of Kokoda.
More information and application forms can be found at oesc.com.au. Applications close at the end of March.
