Federal Greens leader Richard Di Natale has listed the controversial push as one of his top priorities for 2018, saying his team would coordinate with more than 100 Greens councillors across the country to make changes in their communities.

"All Australians want a day on which we can come together and to celebrate our wonderfully diverse, open and free society - but January 26 is not that day," he said.

Australia Day is celebrated on January 26 to commemorate the landing of the First Fleet in 1788. 

Orange Greens councillor Stephen Nugent supports the policy.

“That date is problematic because it doesn’t recognise the impact on the Indigenous people of Australia,” he said. 

While other dates have been put forward, Cr Nugent said community debate should determine which was ultimately chosen. 

“A lot of people are starting to engage in that debate as opinion pieces are communicating,” he said. 

Gerald Power, a member of Orange’s Indigenous community, said he was happy personally with the current date.

“It’s about how it’s celebrated and having that inclusiveness,” he said. 

Mr Power said a simple change could be including an Indigenous accolade as part of the Australia Day Awards.
