He may be one of the biggest names in world cricket but it’s actually a cause which is close to South African-come-Englishman Kevin Pieterson’s heart that will take the Melbourne Stars phenom to Dubbo on Wednesday.

One of the most exciting batsmen in the game, Pietersen will be at Taronga Western Plains Zoo on Wednesday morning before a meet-and-greet with fans at the Orana Mall Optus store.
While at the zoo, Pietersen will meet a critically-endangered resident Black rhinoceros calf, and announces its name.
Pietersen is a passionate rhinoceros ambassador who announced an “all-out war on poachers” earlier this year and the visit to Dubbo occurs in the lead-up to Pietersen’s farewell game – dubbed the Rhino Match – for the Stars in this summer’s Big Bash League.
One dollar for everyone who attends the match against the Hobart Hurricanes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday, January 27 will be donated towards rhinoceros conservation.
During last year, Pietersen also started using Spartan cricket bats featured rhinoceros-inspired designs.
“Every time I go out there I’m representing and animal which could be extinct in 20 years,” Pietersen said at the time.
“It’s about raising awareness, raising money, channeling it in the right way and playing for the greater good, rather than just going out and trying to whack sixes.
“I’ve dedicated the rest of my career to batting for rhinos.
“It’s something I’m very, very keen to do.”
Pietersen will visit the rhinos from 10.30am and then will be at Optus store at 12pm on Wednesday and will be available for autographs and photos with fans there at the latter event.
The Rhino Match will definitely be Pietersen’s last for the Stars, his side has won only one of its eight games so far this summer and can’t make the finals. Up until now, he’s scored 1098 runs in the BBL through his career at a strike rate of 136.4.
