This year four have been nominated for the Community Event of the Year in the Australia Day awards.
The winner will be announced at the Australia Day celebrations in Cook Park on Friday.
LUMINOSITY
Combine art, music and a colourful show for people of all abilities and you have Luminosity.
The celebration of community skills had an indoor venue at the Naylor Pavilion at the Showgrounds to avoid adverse weather but it didn’t stop a big show being put on.
The event has received multiple nominations for this year’s Australia Day award.
GNOO BLAS CLASSIC CAR AND TRUCK SHOW
When you drive the roads around the Orange Health Service and Jack Brabham Park it is hard to believe it was once a national-level motor racing circuit.
However, every February the car show brings those memories alive with more than 500 entrants and 5500 spectators attending in 2017.
It also provides an economic boost to the region through attracting visitors to the region who book accommodation and buy food and wine.
EASTER CAMEL RACES
Probably the most unusual family event in the region is the Easter Camel Races which attracted 7500 people and raised $37,800 for charity in 2017.
The sight of camels lumbering down the Towac Park home straight was backed by 61 stalls and children’s rides to keep families entertained all day.
The event is run by the Orange Lions Club.
Funds raised assisted the Give Me 5 For Kids charity.
ORANGE parkrun
Since starting in October 2016 the five kilometre parkrun around Gosling Creek has become a popular Saturday morning attraction for more than 100 runners and walkers.
Co-event director Annella Powell said it was one of 260 parkruns in Australia.
“We say all the time parkrun is for walkers as well,” she said.
“What we are really trying to do is improve our community’s health one person at a time.”
