The 23-year-old ex-Orange resident was formally enrolled into the Royal Military College-Duntroon (RMC-D) at a ceremony held in Canberra last week.
Mr Haege, a graduate of Melbourne University’s Bachelor of Environments degree, will begin an 18-month management and military training program at RMC-D.
The aim of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) program is to transform ambitious young citizens into future leaders.
Mr Haege said that for him the biggest benefit is the chance to be part of a committed team, which is driven to accomplishing its goals.
“I am drawn toward the challenging nature and situations which a career in the ADF can offer,” said Mr Haege.
Mr Haege said his interest in a career with the army stemmed from his past experience meeting members of the ADF.
Senior Military Recruiting Officer, Squadron Leader Jacquelen Hatch said that from day one of the training Mr Haege will begin learning to lead teams of up to eight people, with the eventual capacity to take charge of platoons of up to 30 soldiers.
“RMC-D will provide Matthew with a solid foundation, enhancing his ability to think quickly, motivate others and achieve results,” she said.
“He will continue to learn and develop skills throughout his career which are highly respected throughout Australian industry.”
In regards to his future career, he said he is now just focused on graduating from college and achieving the best results possible.
