Led by a Mick Hannelly ton, CYMS produced its best batting performance of the 2017-18 Orange District Cricket Association season to trounce Kinross and, just like that, shoot back into the top two on the standings.

In a show of just how tight the middle of the table is, CYMS came into Saturday’s clash in fourth but leapfrog the now third and fourth-placed Cavaliers and Centrals, respectively, into second with the 85-run victory.
Saturday’s century was Hannelly’s third time he’s passed 50 this summer but the first time he’s capitalised and turned it into a triple-figure score, his 116 leading CYMS to 5-252 from their 50 overs.
Then, led by skipper Hamish Finlayson’s excellent 4-14 from 10 overs, the green and golds strangled Kinross, restricting the students to 9-167 in reply.
”We said we wanted to get back into the winners’ circle and we have, it was a very good win and it’s great to push back up to second,” Finlayson said.
“We still have plenty we can improve on, but I couldn’t be happier with that win.
“Mick just batted beautifully. It was a pretty chanceless hundred really, he’s just in such good form and it was great to see him crack triple figures again.”
Hannelly’s ton was his second in the top grade, he first cracked triple figures against Cavaliers in round eight last summer. He spent the bulk of his time at the crease with Tom Belmonte (50) on Saturday, the pair added 106 for the second wicket.
“It’s funny how this game works sometimes. I probably haven’t been enjoying my cricket as much as I’d like this summer, and that’s when I go out and score a ton,” Hannelly, who’s now punched 350 runs at 43.8 this summer, admitted.

- CYMS skipper Hamish Finlayson
“It’s always a pretty good feeling to get one though and it was great to bat for a while with Tommy Belmonte. We actually did it pretty easy through the first part of our innings.
“The outfield at Kinross was long so you don’t get as much value for your shots, so we made a point of running hard, ticking along and rotating the strike. It worked well, helped us manipulate the field and I think it really put Kinross on their heels a bit.”
CYMS lost Matt Baker (4) early, bringing Hannelly and Belmonte together.
The young guns pushed the score to 1-70 at drinks and then 114 before the latter was dismissed.
With Joel Crosswell (24) and the returning Dave Neil (17 not out), Hannelly pushed CYMS to 217 before being bowled by Stu Crisp, Neil and Mitch Winslade (15) lifted CYMS to 5-252 after that.
Kinross toughed it out, but Finlayson’s miserly spell along with wickets for Ben Wright (2-30), Mitch Winslade (1-30), Chris Novak (1-23) and Gavin Bridge (1-9) kept the students in check.
CYMS now trail competition leaders Orange City by 19 points, and are two points clear of Cavaliers with Centrals another three points further back.
Kinross round out the standings. The students are 12 points behind Centrals.
