Prada’s Priscillas: An All-Male Revue will play a show at the Orange Civic Theatre in February, led by producer, director and singer Prada Clutch – one of the most well-known drag queens in Australia.
The show will be a rare chance to see drag on the biggest stage in Orange.
“I’ve had quite a few people come to a show and it doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight – people are usually open minded and it lets people come and enjoy the show,” Ms Clutch said.
“We’ve had people turn up in drag and they’ll say ‘this is first time I’ve done this in public’. That was in Dubbo and I thought that was pretty exciting.”
Ms Clutch said it can be hard for people to have the space to explore themselves and their sexuality without judgement and seeing shows like this in person is “absolutely” a benefit for LGBTQI people in regional areas.
She said when she was young, “it wasn’t done or spoken about”.
“The first time I went to Oxford Street and saw drag and thought ‘oh I’m not weird or different’, so if we can bring that [feeling] out to the people regionally that’s fantastic,” she said.
The show itself is a nod to the cult film Priscilla, and while it includes half a dozen numbers from the movie in the 90-minute run time, but Ms Clutch explains the show will explore where drag has come from and where it’s going.
With a “massive” tribute to the Les Girls and performances of Lady Gaga and Cher numbers, Ms Clutch said “it’s a spectacular of colour and dancing and disco and glitter and fabulousness”.
“Last time some people would have seen this is when they went to King’s Cross and a lot of people say ‘it was so nice to bring back those memories’,” she said.
Being able to tour regionally astounds Ms Clutch, who is used to performing in Sydney.
“I don’t know people in these towns but they come out and see the shows anyway, and obviously you love selling out a show but to sell out in a town when you don’t know a single person is special.”
“I appreciate it so much, without the audience there’s no show”
