That’s the message CYMS captain Hamish Finlayson sent to his troops ahead of Saturday’s Orange District Cricket Association match-up with Kinross, a game the side heads into in a very unfamiliar position.
For the first time in as long as Finlayson can remember, the green and golds have dropped out of the competition’s top three, after a very un-CYMS-like start to the summer.
“We have had a real culture of success around the club in recent seasons but we’ve got a lot of new faces this season and we have struggled to put the same 11 or 12 on the field in consecutive games, so I think it’s just taken us a bit more time than we wanted to come together as a side,” Finlayson said.
“It’s not panic stations at all, I’m not too worried about it. I just think after the last few years this season we’ve been a bit guilty of sitting back and waiting and expecting something to happen rather than getting in there and making it happen.
“We’ve got a great bunch of guys together and I’m confident it’ll start coming together for us, and dropping down to fourth will be good for us I think. It might gives us a bit of wake-up call, so I’m looking forward to seeing how we respond to that.”
Finlayson’s troops have the benefit of facing a side they’ve very much enjoyed the wood on in recent seasons in the students, although he’s certainly not underestimating Kinross.
In the two sides’ last 16 games CYMS have won 14, the last time Kinross beat Finlayson’s side was in round 13 of 2015-16 and before that, in round three of 2011-12.
“It’s definitely a good chance for us to get out there, hopefully get on top and win. We definitely need to start winning a few more games,” Finlayson said.
“But it’s not going to be easy, Kinross actually has a really, really good side. There’s a lot of talent there, they just haven’t quite put it together.
“They’re more than capable of winning and beating every team in this competition I think, but that goes for every team. It’s very open this season, which is great.”
Saturday’s round 10 fixture kicks off at 11am, at Kinross Main Oval.
