Not only is the local hero expected to be fixtured on Rod Laver Arena - instead of his usual home in Hisense Arena - but he will be taking on a childhood hero in Jo-Wilfred Tsonga.

Kyrgios overcame an abundance of distractions to defeat Serbian Victor Troicki in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 in front of a boisterous crowd on Wednesday night.

After admitting to playing in the toughest conditions of his career, Kyrgios believes he's ready for centre court.

"Yeah, I think I'm ready for it, I've played a lot of matches on Rod Laver. I'm guessing that I'll probably be playing on Rod Laver next round and, yeah, of course I'm ready it."

Facing him at the other end of the court will be a man Kyrgios openly admits to looking up to for much of his junior life in Tsonga.

The pair are sure to put on a show, which Kyrgios says will be "fun".

"When I was 12, I went to all his practice sessions. He made the final in 2008, and I went to all his practice sessions with a new ball and he signed it every day.

"I don't know if he remembers, but I didn't miss one of his practice sessions."

If Kyrgios plays at all on Friday like he did on Wednesday night, it will make for a terrific contest.

The Australian sent down 17 aces, three of which were in the fourth game of the opening set, at 208, 211 and 215km/h.

He returned brilliantly as well, something he referred to in his post match media conference, managing to get back 67 per cent of Troicki's serves compared to the Serb's 49 per cent.

And he did it all in the face of significant adversity.

A very calm and controlled Kyrgios had to deal with a plethora of distractions, including a heckler, a helicopter, a broken shoelace and a misbehaving microphone.

A tight first set - in which Kyrgios served phenomenally but was otherwise mediocre by his standards - saw the pair trade blows until the Australian broke Troicki in the 11th game and serve it out comfortably to take the first set 7-5.

Things were looking even better for the local hero when he broke early in the second set, but then the distractions came flooding in.

First, a screaming man had to be ejected from the stadium by security.

Then, a low flying helicopter - perhaps an overeager pilot trying to get a glimpse of the action - clearly distracted Kyrgios.

"It actually made it tough, it was tough to return," Kyrgios later explained.

"Hearing the ball come of the racquet is actually a pretty big thing, you know I missed four returns, so I'm just going to blame it on the helicopter," he smiled.

As if that wasn't enough, it wasn't long before Kyrgios didn't have an opponent at the other end, after Troicki snapped a shoelace while reaching for a wide ball and ran to his bag to replace it.

Will Ferrell might have been at Rod Laver Arena to interview Roger Federer, but you could have easily been forgiven for thinking that Anchorman 3 was being filmed at Hisense Arena, such was the calamity of the night.

Despite all of this, Kyrgios held his nerve to take out the second set and suddenly was looking at three break points in the opening game of the third.

But, more distractions.

Like a news anchor whose autocue had been altered, the crowd couldn't help but laugh when the chair umpire's microphone began playing up.

Strange sounds were being emitted every time the umpire spoke, leading to chortling from the crowd, which didn't please Kyrgios.

In the same game, he surrendered four break points, leading to Kyrgios having a strong conversation wih the umpire, James Keothavong, at the change of ends.

Was he about to lose his cool? No. This is a new Nick, a calmer Kyrgios.

He saved a break point in the very next game and went on to break Troicki in the third game, setting up anything but a comfortable straight sets win.
