After dominating England all summer, Steve Smith's men are on the back foot in the one-day series heading into the second game in Brisbane on Friday.

They have been dealt more setbacks with wicketkeeper Tim Paine and quick Josh Hazlewood both missing training on Wednesday.

The loss at the MCG came days after Australia marked their 4-0 Ashes triumph with a hearty celebration in Sydney, where Test specialists Shaun Marsh and Jackson Bird were photographed smoking. Coach Darren Lehmann said he had no troubles with his players' behaviour.

The Australians say they did not go over the top and received support from an unlikely ally in the England camp in Jonny Bairstow.

Although the cramped modern fixture gives players little time to let their hair down, Australian teams have made a point of enjoying major victories.

"From us, as Steve [Smith] said, you have to celebrate your wins," Warner said. "It was a long summer for us. To play the way we did and beat England 4-0, everyone deserves to go out and celebrate.

"If people think it's over the top, that's their own opinion. For us, you get one day to sum up a summer. I think we did it in the right sense."

Bairstow said England would have done the same had they retained the urn.

"If you can't celebrate winning the Ashes I'm not sure what you can celebrate, other than your wedding or something like that," Bairstow said.

A bigger factor in Australia's loss is England's rejuvenation in the 50-over arena, where they have gone from a basket case just three years ago to one of the format's trendsetters.

Under Trevor Bayliss, the English have embraced power hitters, such as Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Jos Buttler, and taken a see ball, hit ball mantra.

Since their World Cup debacle in 2015, where they failed to progress past the group stage, England have won 35 of 54 completed matches. They are particularly good batting second, winning 19 of 24, including five successful run chases in excess of 300. Two losses came after they made 365 and 366 batting second.

"You know what they're going to bring to the table," Warner said. "They've played a different brand of cricket the last 12 months, they've been more aggressive up top and with the ball with a bit of pace as well.

"They're setting the benchmark at the moment."

Warner said Australia want to make the Gabba their fortress in the 50-over game, as it is in Tests, where they have not lost since 1988. The reigning World Cup champions have won nine of their past 10 at the venue.

It was here in 2013 where Australia, with James Faulkner in red-hot form, added 57 for the 10th wicket to secure a thrilling victory in the last over.

"It was an awesome feeling for us to be in that position and come back and fight back well and win that game," Warner said. "It set the tone for the whole series, which was great.

"When we come here we come with confidence because we try to make it our fortress in all formats."

Paine is battling gastro and has not joined the team but is expected to play, while Hazlewood has a virus.

The giant quick was rested from Sunday's game. Western Australia quick Jhye Richardson is in line to make his ODI debut if Hazlewood is not available.
